Double Truss Segment Inline Connector

This new and improved industrial-grade double truss container shelter features significant engineering upgrades to the truss segment connection method. We listened to our customers who requested a shelter with a more durable frame construction to compliment the existing design and responded with this new model.

The upgraded method of connecting truss segments together using an inline steel plate has contributed to the following.

  • Improved rigidity: The solid plate-to-plate joint between truss segments creates a more rigid connection, which is beneficial for the overall structural performance of the dome  shelter.
  • Greater stability: The plate connection provides a more stable joint, reducing the risk of local buckling or deformation at the connection points, especially when subjected to adverse weather in certain parts of Australia.
  • Improved load distribution: The inline steel plate connection spreads forces more evenly across the truss segment joint, reducing stress concentrations that could occur with direct tube-to-tube bolting, especially in high wind-prone locations.
  • Improved load path: With reduced eccentricity, the load path through the truss is more direct. This is especially important in a PVC shelter where the fabric covering relies on the truss for its shape and support.
  • Enhanced moment resistance: The plate connection improves the resistance to bending moments at the joint, which is crucial for maintaining the arch shape under load.
  • Increased shear capacity: The bolted plate connection was designed to resist higher shear forces compared to direct tube-to-tube bolting.
  • Reduced eccentricity: By aligning the truss segments precisely on each end of the truss segment, eccentricities that could lead to additional stresses are instantly minimised.
  • Alignment of forces: The plate connection joint aligns the centerlines of the truss segments more precisely. This means that the axial forces in the truss members are transferred through the joint, reducing bending moments at the connection point.
  • Minimized off-center loading: Eccentricity can happen when the line of action of a force doesn’t pass through the centroid of a section. The plate connection minimises this off-center loading, which could otherwise cause twisting or bending in the truss members.
  • Reduced long-term deformation: Solid butt-joins are known to be less prone to loosening over time compared to direct hollow section tube bolting, especially under dynamic loads. Dynamic loads refer to forces that change over time, as opposed to static loads which remain constant.

In the context of a dome shelter, dynamic loads can include:

  1. Wind forces: Gusts and sustained winds that push and pull on the structure.
  2. Thermal expansion and contraction: Vast temperature changes causing materials to expand and contract.
  3. Vibrations: From nearby machinery, vehicles, or even minor seismic activity.
  4. Usage-related stresses: For example, if the dome is used for events, the movement of people or oversized mining equipment operating inside the shelter can create changing loads.

Double Truss Roof Structure

  • Enhanced Structural Integrity: Our double trussed frame with inline truss connector plate (as opposed to bolting the trusses together on the tube itself) design in this 40x40ft/12x12m shelter equates to superior strength and stability. The engineering of this shelter increases the tolerance to withstand harsh weather conditions, including high winds and extreme temperatures, ensuring protection for machinery, equipment, and personnel.
  • High Load Bearing Capacity: Specifically engineered to handle significant loads, this double trussed design makes the shelter well-suited for areas prone to persistent adverse weather conditions, or for a structure that requires the additional strength in its frame structure.
  • Durability and Corrosion Resistance: Constructed from high-grade, corrosion-resistant, hot-dip galvanised steel, this shelter is designed for longevity and minimal maintenance, even in challenging environmental locations.
  • Customisable, Modular Design: We can advise on and supply a range of shelter configurations to suit any site requirements, including adjustable sizes, the addition of front and end walls, and ventilation systems, ensuring a tailored solution for every need.
  • Cost-Effective Long-Term Solution: While providing immediate protection and operational continuity, the durable and low-maintenance nature of this trussed frame dome shelters represents a cost-effective investment over time, with benefits extending far beyond the initial setup.
